General Description

Citizen engagement is changing frameworks for building trust, and consequently, of public governance.

During this two-day exchange, we will review the trends and sceneries towards 2030 in matters such as e-citizen engagement and new projects that are changing the lives of millions of people through governance, transparency, migration, among others, towards development in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Before traveling

San José will host the IXX Annual IDB Group – Civil Society Meeting.

San José is the largest city and capital of Costa Rica. It stands out among Latin American cities because of its high quality of life and its leading tourist attractions in Central America. Furthermore, it was proclaimed the 2006 Iber-American Culture Capital. It accounts for approximately 2’723,850 habitants.

International Costa Rica Airport

The El Juan Santamaría International Airport is located in Alajuela, 20 km east from San José downtown area.



This event is open to all representatives of foundations, social enterprises, associations, innovation hubs, influencers, and members of organizations located in any of the 26 IDB member countries.


Average temperatures surround 25 °C (with a minimum of 18 °C, and a maximum of 27 °C) with high levels of rain.

Language and interpretation

The official language in San José is Spanish. Visit us again soon to know about interpretation from English to Spanish and vice versa during sessions.


The official currency in Costa Rica is the Costa Rican Colón, and is identified with the symbol «₡».

Green event

The IDB – Civil Society Meeting is a green event. Most of the information will be shared via dedicated screens. We encourage all participants to print as little material as possible. During registration, participants will receive an information kit.

Participants are solely responsible for their personal belongings, equipment and devices. We recommend taking all necessary precautions to protect them and ensure your personal safety. For example, keep documents and valuables in the safe box of your hotel room, avoid leaving cameras and other such items in plain sight, and only use transportation that is properly identified or recommended.

Travel and Health Insurance

Participants are responsible for obtaining medical and/or travel insurance covering theft or personal accidents. We strongly suggest acquiring travel insurance. The IDB is not responsible for medical or travel insurance covering theft or accidents before, during or after the event.


Travel from the airport to the event venue will take approximately 25 minutes, and has an approximate cost of ₡16, 822 (US$30.00).

Transportation to/from the airport and to activities not included in the event is the responsibility of each participant. We recommend using taxis from the official companies operating at the airport or hotel services.

Dress Code 

We recommend wearing business casual attire during the event. Remember that temperature inside conference rooms may vary.


Depending on their citizenship, attendees may require a visa to enter the country. However, most Latin American countries have visa waiver agreements. For a list of passports requiring a visa, visit, this link
