The extractive industry contributes significantly to the economic growth of countries rich in natural resources. This training is the result of the findings of the regional diagnosis “Extractive sector and civil society: when the work of communities, governments and industries is synonymous with development.
In this context, as part of the Academic offer of the Civil Society – Institutional Capacity Building Program, this new course was designed to learn about the relationship between civil society, extractive industries and governments in extractive projects of natural resources. The course highlights what has already worked in the joint work between these three parties with real examples of countries rich in natural resources.
The contents, audiovisual material and readings proposed throughout the course reveal the possibilities that the responsible extractive sector generates with respect to the environment.

The course teaches a methodology with applicable tools, based on best development practices for an effective engagement among industries, communities and governments. This knowledge will allow participants to understand and replicate development and territorial growth opportunities that respect the environment.

In this unit, participants will analyze the most effective actions for providing and capturing data and references that help maximize the possibilities for territorial development, as well as the best implementation of the extractive project. They will also learn the importance of obtaining information related to the initiative, using various channels that are relevant, timely and understandable to all involved.
Participants will learn through practical cases how a regular, active and structured exchange can create and strengthen constructive relationships between companies, governments and communities, while also building the trust necessary to implement initiatives or projects related to the extractive activity, from a sustainability lens.
UNIT 3. CONSULTATION
In this unit, participants will discover the scope of public consultations as regulated mechanisms for collecting inputs and proposals from the human groups impacted by the implementation of a specific extractive project. This happens through a formal, public process organized within the framework of specific legal and sector regulatory systems.
UNIT 4. COLLABORATION
In this unit, participants will analyze and expand their knowledge regarding the benefits of generating knowledge and capacities for local growth, taking advantage of the technical contributions of communities and improving their capacities to carry out satellite projects related to the main extractive operation, in order to strengthen territorial development.
UNIT 5. PARTNERSHIP
In the last unit of the course, participants will recognize that alliances help increase development opportunities by financing well-prepared civil society organizations that have transparency mechanisms (either community mechanisms or others), in order to implement a project or component that promotes sustainable territorial growth.
