General Description

“Learn what has already worked with the joint  efforts between the 3 development actors with real examples from the extractive sector”.

Did you know that 4% of Latin America and the Caribbean’s GDP comes from mining, oil and gas? A responsible extractive sector means development.

The extractive industry contributes significantly to the economic growth of countries rich in natural resources. This training is the result of the findings of the regional diagnosis “Extractive sector and civil society: when the work of communities, governments and industries is synonymous with development.

In this context, as part of the Academic offer of the Civil Society – Institutional Capacity Building Program, this new course was designed to learn about the relationship between civil society, extractive industries and governments in extractive projects of natural resources. The course highlights what has already worked in the joint work between these three parties with real examples of countries rich in natural resources.

The contents, audiovisual material and readings proposed throughout the course reveal the possibilities that the responsible extractive sector generates with respect to the environment.

 

Methodology

The course teaches a methodology with applicable tools, based on best development practices for an effective engagement among industries, communities and governments. This knowledge will allow participants to understand and replicate development and territorial growth opportunities that respect the environment.

The training teaches how to improve implementation of initiatives and projects, and helps to understand government frameworks and initiatives designed to ensure the sustainability of highly complex operations.

You will have 90 days to complete all units of this training and acquire the certificate, starting on the date of your registration.

Participants

Designed specially, but not restricted, to:

  • Officials from government agencies, such as ministries of mines, environment, hydrocarbons, infrastructure, indigenous affairs. We encourage staff from both national, provincial and local offices to participate.
  • Representatives of communities surrounding by an extractive project.
  • Members of civil society organizations (CSOs) environmentalists, mediators, rural development, lobbying.
  • Academy, especially representatives of faculties related to the extractive, environmental, social development theme.
  • Extractive industry personnel, mining or hydrocarbon companies, as well as other industries that handle projects of great socio-environmental impact.

Participant Requirements

It is desirable that all participants:

  • Have an interest in receiving training to coordinate highly complex projects (such as extractive projects) involving civil society, governments and companies in the sector.
  • Have general knowledge of the extractive industry. Understanding its regulatory frameworks is not a requirement but will facilitate the appreciation of the complexities of large-scale operations.
  • Are capable of browsing the Internet, performing web searches, selecting and using information related to the extraction of natural resources.
  • Master the use of basic office software.

Goals

The course “Civil society, extractive industries and governments driving development” teaches a methodology with applicable tools, based on best development practices for an effective engagement among industries, communities and governments.

Certificate

Upon completion of the INDES online course, participants receive a certificate according to the following conditions:

  • Certificate of course completion: If you meet the conditions for participation in the course and earn a point total more than 65 and less than 90
  • Certificate of course completion with honors for excellence: If you meet the conditions for participation in the course and earn a point total above 90

Content and Structure

In this unit, participants will analyze the most effective actions for providing and capturing data and references that help maximize the possibilities for territorial development, as well as the best implementation of the extractive project. They will also learn the importance of obtaining information related to the initiative, using various channels that are relevant, timely and understandable to all involved.
