The Bank, through the Transportation Division (TSP) has been leading an initiative to improve road safety in LAC. As part of the initiative, TSP developed a Massive online Open Course (MOOC) “Road Safety for Latin America and the Caribbean from theory to action.

Traffic deaths are the leading cause of death among people between 15 and 29 years old. In Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), the fatality rate from road traffic injuries is on the rise and is twice the average in high-income countries.

According to World Health Organization estimates, road traffic injuries in LAC among 10-29-year-olds might reach 34,313 deaths, more than suicide (13,508), HIV/AIDS (8,275) and cardiovascular disease (10,830) combined.

Participants
  • Public officials of the different countries of the Caribbean who work in transport ministries, agencies or secretaries of road safety, health, education and transit departments.
  • University students and master’s level of careers related to transportation and prevention and management of injuries caused in transit (focus on economy and transport engineering, public health, sustainable transport)
  • Journalists interested in the subject, mainly those in the section of cars, transport and health
  • Officials of the multilateral banks, with focus on the transport, education, health and safety division
  • Officials of NGOs and foundations that work on issues related to road safety.

Certificate

Available for those who pass the course (minimum 65 points out of 100 possible), meet the requirements of identity verification and assume the cost of $ 25 (optional)

Methodology

Adequate combination of resources and learning activities necessary to bring about positive changes in the behaviors, attitudes and practices of the participants

Requirements

o Language: Spanish (English should be available in 2020)

o Duration: 8 weeks (1 module per week for a total of 8 thematic modules)

o Dedication of the participants: 4-6 hours per week for a total of 24-36 hours

o Access to participants: Free, unlimited, without prerequisites or any restriction (24×7)

o Level: Introductory – medium

o Certificate: Available for those who pass the course (minimum 65 points out of 100 possible), meet the requirements of identity verification and assume the cost of $ 25 (optional)

o Methodology: Adequate combination of resources and learning activities necessary to bring about positive changes in the behaviors, attitudes and practices of the participants

o Type and amount of learning resources per module: 6 to 10 videos between 3 and 7 minutes each, 1 main reading, selection of 2 to 5 complementary readings, 1 forum for discussion among participants, 1 learning activity, 25 questions about videos and readings.
